Reagan's Welfare State

 



San Diego's underground newspaper Door to Liberation in 1970 took California Gov. Ronald Reagan to task for his apparent animosity toward poor people -- a position he would carry with him into the White House a decade later.

The editors charged the mainstream media with buying Reagan's line about welfare waste, claims the Door's staff said were inaccurate. They closed the piece on this note:
"The Press has a responsibility. That is to print the truth, not just the news! Heretofore, the Press has seen fit to print anything that sells papers. That practice may build up readership, but it doesn't build good moral sense."
